The Paleo List Answers:IS HONEY MUSTARD PALEO?
Honey mustard should be exactly what it sounds like: a mixture of honey and mustard. When it comes to regular grocery store condiments, you don’t always get what you see. We’ll take a look at honey mustard and let you know if you can dip your Paleo chicken fingers into this sweet and savory concoction.
What is Honey Mustard?
It sounds pretty basic, right? Honey + mustard = honey mustard. With our bottled condiments, that’s not always the case. Let’s take a look at the ingredients for a few brands of bottled honey mustard.
First up, French’s Honey Mustard:
INGREDIENTS: DISTILLED VINEGAR, WATER, HIGH FRUCTOSE CORN SYRUP, #1 GRADE MUSTARD SEED, SUGAR, CORN SYRUP, SALT, CARROT OLEORESIN (COLOR), SPICES AND GARLIC POWDER.
Next, Ken’s Steakhouse Honey Mustard Dressing:
INGREDIENTS: Soybean Oil, High Fructose Corn Syrup, Distilled Vinegar, Dijon Mustard (Distilled Vinegar and Water, Mustard Seed, Salt, White Wine, Citric Acid, Tartaric Acid, Spices), honey, Egg Yolk, Sugar, Contains less that 2% of: Spice, Xanthan Gum, Salt, Natural Flavor, Paprika (Color), Calcium Disodium EDTA to protect flavor, Yellow #5.
Finally, Annie’s Naturals Organic Honey Mustard:
Ingredients: *Mustard (*apple cider vinegar, water. * mustard seed, salt), *cane sugar, *honey, * cinnamon. (*Organic ingredients)
Is Honey Mustard Paleo?
Look at that! Annie’s almost passes the test, but there’s more sugar than honey in their recipe. We’re going to say store-bought honey mustard sauce and dressings are not Paleo, but there’s no reason why you can’t enjoy this delicious concoction! Raw honey is considered Paleo (in moderation), and mustard is Paleo, so whip up a batch! Just be sure to check the ingredients before you settle on a brand of mustard.
There’s really no reason to buy the stuff in bottles when it is so simple to make at home. Whether you’re making enough for a 50-person BBQ or an afternoon snack, you simply mix together Paleo-approved mustard and the highest quality honey you can afford and you’re good to go!
