what are egg beaters made of

Eating like a caveman doesn’t have to be expensive, but most of us don’t have the time or money to shell out for regular consumption of game and grass-fed meat. Any budget-friendly Paleo dieter knows that eggs are a caveman’s best friend, so what about their carton-counterpart, Egg Beaters? Are Egg Beaters Paleo?

What Are Egg Beaters?

Egg Beaters are basically liquid egg product. In an effort to bank on the claims that cholesterol causes heart disease, food manufacturers created this egg-like product using egg whites and various additives. Free of cholesterol, Egg Beaters are made by chemically separating the whites from the yolks, then adding “natural flavor” and a whole slew of manufactured vitamins you’d normally find in the egg yolk.

Eggs are nature’s simplest food. Packed with choline, healthy omega-3 fatty acids, and antioxidants, they’ve long been lauded as nutritive for just about everyone. You can eat them alone or mixed with vegetables, meat, or in baked goods. On the flip side, Egg Beaters are highly processed with the following laundry list of ingredients:

Ingredients: Egg Whites, Less than 1%: Natural Flavor, Color (Includes Beta Carotene), Spices, Salt, Onion Powder, Vegetable Gums (Xanthan Gum, Guar Gum), Maltodextrin. Vitamins and Minerals: Calcium Sulfate, Iron (Ferric Phosphate), Vitamin E (Alpha Tocopherol Acetate), Zinc Sulfate, Calcium Pantothenate, Vitamin B12, Vitamin B2 (Riboflavin), Vitamin B1 (Thiamine Mononitrate), Vitamin B6 (Pyridoxine Hydrochloride), Folic Acid, Biotin, Vitamin D3

Are Egg Beaters Paleo?

No! Egg Beaters are not Paleo. And if someone says they are, they’re not in touch with what it means to be Paleo. Yes, Egg Beaters seem pretty simple for busy mornings. No cracking and whisking; just pour ‘em into a pan and you’ve got scrambled eggs in minutes. Wait, not real scrambled eggs, scrambled chemically separated egg whites with lots of non-Paleo additives. And if you’re into the Paleo diet, then you know that you should always (always!) eat the yolk!
