IS JUSTIN’S ALMOND BUTTER PALEO?
The Paleo List Answers:Is Justin’s Almond Butter Paleo?
Even Paleo neophytes know that almonds are a-okay, peanuts should be avoided, and all seed and nut butters should be consumed in moderation. But while you’re out looking for Paleo-approved almond butters, you might find additional ingredients. We’ll check out a major brand, Justin’s Almond Butter, and look into the questionable second ingredient: palm oil.
What is Justin’s Almond Butter?
Justin’s is a company that prepares a line of nut butters, including peanut butter and a chocolate hazelnut butter similar to Nutella. Many people love Justin’s because they create a few varieties of individual packs of nut butters, including peanut and almond, without highly refined sugars. Justin’s brand of Classic Almond Butter contains no salt or sugar, just roasted almonds and palm fruit oil.
As Mark Sisson said, “Of the tropical oils, coconut gets the most attention, while palm oil gets mostly ignored.” He continues on to detail the benefits of palm oil in its various forms, and explains its heat stability. Across the board, it seems like most people on the Paleo diet are perfectly content with palm oil.
Is Justin’s Almond Butter Paleo?
Jarred nut butter with just almonds and palm oil is Paleo, so go ahead and enjoy taking your packs of Justin’s Almond Butter and a banana with you on a hike, to the office, or as a post-workout snack. A quick look at the list of ingredients in their other products tells you that the rest are not quite so Paleo, but rest assured, their Classic Almond Butter is Paleo!
