The Paleo List Answers:IS AVOCADO OIL PALEO?

We hear a lot about healthy fats, such as those from grass-fed beef, but what about plant-based “healthy” fats? We’ve covered coconut oil and olive oil in past posts, so now we’ll tackle another plant-based oil: avocado oil. Is it Paleo?

What is Avocado Oil?

Avocado oil is exactly what it sounds like! It is the oil extracted from the avocado fruit. (Yes, it is a fruit!) Just like with coconut oil, you can get unrefined (virgin) oil, or refined avocado oil.

IS AVOCADO OIL PALEO

Virgin avocado oil has a smoke point of about 350 degrees Fahrenheit, while refined avocado oil can be safely heated to 500-520 degrees Fahrenheit. However, refined oils are more processed than their virgin counterparts, and most people agree they should be avoided.

Is Avocado Oil Paleo?

Yes, we are totally on board with avocado oil, as long as it is completely unrefined. Even refined avocado oil is probably okay, and certainly better than canola and soybean oil, but if we wanted to stick with 100% Paleo, we would only use unrefined avocado oil. Much like with coconut oil, the refining process often eliminates the oil’s unique flavors and healthy benefits, simultaneously making it more heat stable. Unrefined avocado oil is great for salad dressings and baking, but not ideal for high-heat cooking. Check out the posts below for more details.
