Are Anchovies Paleo?

Many of you might only know anchovies as those salty little fish adorning Caesar salads and pizza, but they’re actually a lot more common around the world than you might think. Standard Caesar and pizza might not be Paleo, but what about anchovies? Are they Paleo?

What Are Anchovies?

Anchovies are not a single species of fish, they’re actually a family of forage fish, which are known for feeding near the bottom of the food chain. It is hard to find fresh anchovies, but the canned varieties line supermarket shelves around the world. Often brined in salt and packed in oil, they make a umami-salty addition to sauces, soups, dressings, and more.

Are Anchovies Paleo?

Yes, anchovies are Paleo! The only factor that some might worry about is the salt content, but as long as you’ve got enough potassium in your diet, sodium intake shouldn’t be an issue. If you’re concerned, simply rinse off the fish after removing from the can and you’ll wash away a lot of the sodium. Go ahead and make your own Parmesan-free version of avocado Caesar dressing, or toss them on your Paleo pizza if you’re in to that sort of thing!
